La Trobe University Hockey Club are pleased to announce that on August the 9th we will once again be participating in “Fair Go Sport”, a fantastic initiative from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission to promote gender and sexual diversity in sport. We are proud that for the third year in the row LTUHC will be sporting our rainbow colours and showing the community that we are an all-inclusive, safe and welcoming club.
In 2010, a national report from the Australian government identified that sport is a significant site of homophobic harassment, discrimination and exclusion. With this in mind, the Australian Sports Commission funded “Fair Go Sport” and HV jumped on board, with a small number of clubs signing up in the first year. Last year the program was extended to include basketball, cycling, football and roller derby in addition to hockey extending it’s involvement and a pilot program being introduced in many Victorian schools.
In 2014 La Trobe will celebrate and promote our all-inclusive environment by hosting a special club day down at the cauldron. The day will kick off at 10am with the juniors sporting rainbow tattoos, followed by the men’s and women’s 1’s and reserves who will be proudly wearing the “Fair Go Sport” rainbow socks. A spread of specially prepared baked good will be available alongside a special selection of winter warming and colourful beverages. Medals will be awarded to best on ground in the 4 seniors games. Metro captains will also wear rainbow socks for the round.
The day promises to be another huge day down at the Cauldron with Cocktail Party to follow the rainbow festivities. So if you aren’t playing, come down and bring a friend, wear your colours with pride and have a free cake.
