La Trobe University Hockey Club was well represented last week at Southern University Games played in Albury/Wodonga by 18 Men and 15 Women players, with the two teams made up of players from our Bendigo and Bundoora campuses.
Both teams played well throughout the tournament excelling both on and off the field. The teams managed to win Bronze medals and qualify for Australian University Games which will be held in Sydney later this year.
In the bronze medal game, the Men overcame a 2 goal deficit, fighting back to win 6-4 against Swinburne University. The Women’s team had a tough battle against RMIT finishing 2-2. The win was secured when new VicLeague player Caitlin Frisina managed to score the golden goal in extra time to win the bronze medal.
Congratulations to the managers Peter McCoy and Georgia Morsley on organising a great week and congratulations to all their players who were excellent ambassadors for the university and also the club.
The hockey team’s efforts helped lift La Trobe University to clinch the overall title of Southern University Games Champions.
Many of our club’s players have participated in University Games/Inter-Varsity Games over the years and it is a vital element of the club’s history. The club looks forward to continuing its existing partnership with the University in fostering and promoting the university’s hockey talent.
