Remembering Gordon Donnelly

The La Trobe University Hockey Club was recently very sad to hear of the passing of a club stalwart, Gordon Donnelly.

Gordon passed away earlier this week at Point Lonsdale at the young age of 64.

Gordon and his brother Kevin were actively involved in the club in the early 1980’s. Ross, Maurice, Andrew, Pat, Robert, Charlie and Shacko remember Gordon. They arrived at the end of that very successful era at LTUHC but it was a time when things were not all that good for us. Kevin Bannan joined the club as coach and Peter Shackelton can vividly remember Gordon playing an active role supporting those in the lower grades while playing in goals. Gordon also served as club President in 1971.

When the original Pullar Shield was filled, it was Gordon who donated the replacement. Gordon stayed with the Gunners for another four years before he and his wife Ellen purchased a house at Point Lonsdale. When trying to track people down for the 40th Anniversary dinner, it was then that Shacko learnt that Gordon had emigrated to America. Shacko will tell you that Gordon was one of the most friendly and engaging person you could hope to meet.

The club is now considering options to recognise Gordon formally for the future. His contribution and commitment to our club will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with Gordon Donnelly’s family. RIP, a proud Gunner.
