The La Trobe University Hockey Club Women’s 1s have won the VicLeague 2 Premiership.
The Gunners had a strong season finished third on the ladder. They host Knox in the first round of finals, beating them in a dramatic shoot out. They progress through to the Preliminary against a tough Dandenong, again knocking them over with a 2-1, surviving an after the whistle short corner which hit the post.
On Sunday at the State Hockey Centre, the women competing in the grand final against Werribee in a tight game. The women got on top early and went ahead in the second quarter with a goal to Sunel Drowley in open play. Werribee fought back with an equaliser in the third quarter which got the large Werribee crowd up and about. Our women pushed hard for the a winner but Werribee’s defence was up to the task. When the game looked like it was heading to a shoot out, 16 year old Liv Reifschneider found some space near the post and calmly slotting in a goal with ice in her veins. Tension built with Werribee winning three late corners but our corner battery was up to the task. Fittingly club legend Meryl McGlone finished with the ball in the corner of the field surrounded by desperate strikers to win the Women’s second flag in three years.
