Xavier McBain and Phil Nguyen receive the 2015 La Trobe University Best Sports Club Award

On the 15th of October, La Trobe University held their third annual Student Union Awards night, recognising the societies and sports clubs that make up the university’s community.

We are pleased to announce the club received the highest honour of the evening, picking up the 2015 Best Sports Club. The prestigious award is highly sought after, and that title was claimed among a strong field of clubs including Dance Sports and Diving.

“Being named ‘Sports Club of the Year’ and recognised for all of the hard work on and off the field is a great honor, especially when we were up against such a high caliber of clubs.” said club representative Phil Nguyen.

The La Trobe University Hockey Club this year celebrates its 48th year, making it one of the oldest and largest sporting clubs at the university. Not only this, but we are also one of the most diverse and inclusive clubs at La Trobe, with more female student members than anyone else. We have teams to suit players of state level, right down to beginners. In recent years, the club has taken a number of steps to make our club more inclusive, by appointing an Inclusion and Member Protection Officers, promoting gender diversity and making the club a more female friendly environment. Along with having the lowest fees in Victoria and a great social scene, we are clearly a club for everyone at the university.
The club has had a successful year on the field, winning three premierships across the board in our regular season, two Summer Hockey premierships and a silver medal at Australian University Games.

The club is committed to being a club for everyone and we were working hard behind the scenes to make it an even better club in 2016.

Along with the prestigious award, the club receives a $1,000 grant to be invested into the 2016 season.
