At the 2014 Presentation Night, 10th of October, the La Trobe University Hockey Club was pleased to award Tim Longergan with Life Membership. For outstanding service to the Club, he becomes the 16th person to be bestowed this honour in the Club’s 47 year history.
Tim started at the club in 1988, and in 2014 would serve his 26th year of continuous membership to this great club (despite living in Geelong!).
Following the merge of the Men and Women’s clubs, Tim would go on to volunteer as Secretary three times in the early 90s, as well as Treasurer, Men’s Manager twice (where he would go on to become the first Team Manager for the Club’s forst Men’s 5s team), and be awarded the prestigious Clubman of the Year in 1993.
In 2014 he will have played his eighth consecutive year in the club’s Masters, and has been critical in establishing the Club’s first ever Men’s 45s team, and our second team in the Mastesr grade. He also served as the Masters’ Manager and took this team to a mid-season promotion and Premiership.
Off the field, beyond his time on the Club’s Executive Committee, Tim also played roles in the Junior Carnival Committee, the Synthetic Ground Committee and then the Synthetic Ground Management Committee with Reservoir Hockey Club. Tim attended four Inter Varsity Games, was the Men’s Manager for two of them, and acted as a representative on behalf of the club for both La Trobe University Sports and the Victorian Hockey Association.
Life Member Ross Erickson said, “Tim is a gentleman and a true silent asset of our Club. Who else would volunteer to manage the Masters and help setup the 45s+ side?”
Craig Cameron, also Life Member, said, “With his youthful looks and quiet demeanor, Tim impresses everyone with his ‘I will do anything required’ attitude. Picking up the baton when it fell his way, Tim didn’t step back when the club administration needed a steady hand in what was fourth season at the club.”
“It should never be underestimated the amount of work the club secretary must undertake to keep the club wheels in motion and Tim did this so efficiently and effectively that he set a high standard for those that followed.”
“Tim’s on field role has seen him play as both an attacking winger and right half. He has a devastating hit to cross the ball on and his unselfish play has set up many a team goal. He has become a most successful overlapping right half and his quick jog back to the centre with a grin on his face after a team goal is priceless.”
This exemplifies Tim’s life at the Club. Completely unselfish. Honest and with a permanent smile on his face.”
The Club celebrates and congratulates Tim Lonergan for a lifetime of outstanding dedication and commitment to the La Trobe University Hockey Club.
Tim joins the esteemed list of La Trobe University Hockey Club Life Members.
