Women’s Round 2013

WomensRoundThe 22nd and 23rd of June saw the La Trobe University Hockey Club honour and celebrate the females of our club. Women’s Round, a Hockey Victoria initiative, saw our senior La Trobe teams wear pink socks for the weekend and a generous contribution from Miss Biscuit saw all players receive special “pink elephants” for participating in the round.

The Vic League games on Sunday had a large raffle, balloons, banners, cupcakes, macaroons, pink champagne and pink Gatorade to celebrate the weekend. At the conclusion of the day, the raffle drawn out and won by Laura Bracken whilst Mel Smith was voted as the best player of the day in the Vic League 1 game. The weekend was a great way to remember and recognise all the women of our club which includes not only players but supporters and family members and their significant contributions they’ve made to the Gunners.

Our club has gone from strength to strength with the women expanding to five sides in the past two years and in recent times the Women’s 1s and 2s have gained promotion and are on the verge of finals again in 2013. The women are well represented on the committee, the female junior program is booming and our University Games women’s team were bronze medalists at last year’s event.

The club is truly indebted to such women as Sarah Dowling, Kizanne Davies and Belinda Blackburn who laid the foundations for women at the club. Without the contribution of women such as these, the club would not be where it is today.

Thanks to Laura Street and Rachael Bannan for organising the day, to Hockey Victoria for their support and fittingly mother nature put on some stunning sunshine to make the day a great success.
