La Trobe University Hockey Club would like to congratulate Ben Mazzarella on his selection in the Under 15 Boys Victorian Indoor Hockey Team for the 2019 Australian Indoor Hockey Championships, to be held in Goulburn NSW from 8th to 12th January 2019.
Ben started playing hockey at La Trobe at 10 years of age and has become a prominent member of the junior team over the past 5 years, progressing through the U12, U14 and U16 junior teams while collecting several club awards along the way, including this year’s U16 Best and Fairest. Ben has also been a regular player in the Mens Seniors, making his debut in the Vic League Mens 1s earlier in the year. Ben’s tenacity in defence and unpredictability makes him a formidable opponent. Ben is always up for a game and received the MVP award for the club’s summer social hockey competition earlier this year.
In 2017 Ben gained selection into the Hockey Victoria Academy (U15 Boys) and travelled to South Australia as a member of the Development Tour. Ben has twice been selected for the North West Tigers to play in the Junior State Championships. This is Ben’s third season playing indoor hockey and he is now passing on his knowledge and skills through coaching of the Club’s U13 Indoor Hockey Team.
Ben is another fantastic product of our thriving junior program and a great role for everyone at the club with his outstanding work on the field but also off field work with the younger players at the club.
This will be Ben’s first state tour and we wish Ben all the best for the upcoming tournament.
