La Trobe University Hockey Club is deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of former President and Life Member Michael Godfrey.
Michael was a valued member of the Club from 1987 to 2009. He served as President in 1992 and 1993 and, in recognition of his outstanding contribution and many years of dedicated service, was awarded Life Membership in 2007.
Known affectionately as “Frey”, Michael joined the Hockey Club in 1987 when he began his studies at La Trobe University. He grew up in Rochester and completed his final two years of secondary school in Ballarat.
From his earliest years at the Club, Michael played an important role in organising intervarsity and other hockey carnival trips. During his presidency, he helped guide the partnership with Reservoir Hockey Club that led to the development of the turf facility the Club enjoys today. His leadership and attention to detail were instrumental in ensuring the project’s early stages ran smoothly.
After completing his service on the Club’s Board, Michael remained closely involved as a player and mentor, while continuing to enjoy the many friendships and social occasions that were such an important part of Club life.
Michael’s Life Membership was formally presented at the Club’s 40th anniversary dinner in 2007, honouring the lasting impact of his commitment and service.
In 2009, Michael and his family moved to Adelaide. He remained involved in hockey and, despite declining health, continued to play until approximately three months before his passing.
Michael was a stalwart of La Trobe University Hockey Club, and his contribution was immense. He will be remembered for his positive nature, generosity and enduring dedication to the Club. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
