On the 14th of September Hockey Victoria held the 2013 Premierships for the Winter Season, where La Trobe University Hockey Club secured two premiership flags to be added to the ever-growing collection.
With three teams in the finals, the day kicked off with the Men’s 3s against rival Old Carey after having beaten them 3-2 in the Semi Finals. The warm weather tested both teams fitness with no scores at half time. Although the Gunners had a few options in the second half, missed conversions ultimately cost them with Old Carey scoring the winning goal with less than a minute remaining to end the game 0-1. Despite the loss, the Men’s 3s had a strong season to finish second on the ladder and just miss out on the Premiership.
Next up were the Men’s 5s, who went in as favourites after finishing top of the ladder and not conceding a single game for the year. Knox held their own all game but a great early goal for the Gunners put them 1-0 up at half time, and held onto the lead until the final whistle. The Premiership, and the top of the table finish with see the Men’s 5s promoted into Metro 2 for the 2014 season.
To wrap up the day, the supporting Gunners fans headed West across Melbouren to watch the Women’s 4s against Parkville at Footscray. Both teams came out strong and a number of goals back and forth kept the game interesting. But in the end it was the Gunners who, after a strong finish, locked in the Premiership with a score of 5-2. The flag will also see the Women’s 4s promoted into Metro 1 next year as the club aims to introduce Pennant teams across both the Men and Women in the coming years.
Celebrations for the two new flags, as well as a strong year across the club will be held at Presentation Night on the 11th of October 2013.
