On the 15th of September Hockey Victoria held the 2012 Premierships for the winter season, of which La Trobe University Hockey Club had three teams competing.
The day commenced at midday, with our Women’s 4s playing against Kew in Metro 4. The competition was strong, and after one goal for La Trobe Kew were quick to respond. Proceeding into the second half it appeared the game would continue into extra time, until La Trobe secured a short corner after the siren. An excellent piece of play by the Gunners saw the girls put in an excellent goal, securing the Premiership over Kew 2-1.
Next up our Men’s 2s played against Footscray, top of the ladder in Metro 1. Having not beaten them during the season, the boys knew it would be a tough game and it was made even harder when Footscray scored early. The Gunners pushed back with some strong hockey, scoring not one but twice before the final siren, winning our second Premiership of the day, beating Footscray 2-1.
Wrapping up the day were our Women’s 2s, up against CV Blazers in Metro 2. Despite a fantastic season and securing the Minor Premiership finishing top of the ladder, Bendigo came out strong and the game remained scoreless until late into the second half. Unfortunately it was the opposition who scored, and our girls played courageously until the end but sadly couldn’t convert.
While that concludes the playing season for 2012, the Club will be celebrating its two Premierships at Presentation Night on the 5th of October off the back of a very successful year.
