Greg Van Meeuwen Awarded Life Membership

The La Trobe University Hockey Club was pleased to announce Greg van Meeuwen as a Life Member at the 45th Anniversary Ball.

Greg come down at the club in 1992 in the role of Senior Men’s Coach, something he continued through until 1998. During this time he took the Men’s 1s to three grand finals and a promotion into State League 2.

He again stepped up as coach of the Men’s State League team in 2000 taking the Gunners to their breakthrough State League 3 premiership where we defeated Ballarat in extra time.

Greg continued to be a key part of our Men’s 1s, playing in the 2003 premership against RMIT, this time alongside his son – something he would go on to do again some eight years later (in 2011, although with a different son).

As a player, Greg has had an exceptional career at the Gunners, picking up the Men’s 1s Best and Fairest ‘Pullar Shield’ in 1992, 1995 and 1999 – a club record he currently shares.

Greg also won the highly contested ‘George Grouios Goal Scoring Shield’ in 2005, 2006 and 2007 – more times than any other person in the award’s history.

Although he was injured during a game that resulted in a knee reconstruction, Greg has continued to be involved in the club, dedicating time to coach and mentor developing players over the past three years.

Over the past 20 years, Greg’s dedication to the Gunners saw him involved with the club’s first juniors program back in the day, and the establishment of our very first Veteran’s team – often dedicating four days a week to the club to play, train and coach across all levels of the club.

For these reasons, and for many more, Greg Van Meeuwen was awarded the 15th Life Member of the La Trobe University Hockey Club.
