The History of the George Grouios Goal Scoring Shield

George Grouios was a competitive young bloke who came to the Gunners in 1991. He started like most of us, as an 18-year-old who quickly fell in love with the Club.

He went to everything the Club had to offer; Training Camps, Inter Varsity, Cocktail Nights, Trivia Nights, Albury Carnivals, Echuca Carnivals, Presentation Nights – if it was a  hockey function, he was there.

George was a star in the Men’s State League 3 side and was one of the best Right Wings the Club has had. In 1996 he stepped on the Committee as President.

He was also competitive. George and three others started a goal scoring competition, including a trophy they later bought together. George won the trophy a number of times, which would later become known as the George Grouios Goal Scoring Shield.

Tragically at the age of 25, George was diagnosed with cancer and lost his battle on October 13th 1998. All who knew George loved him and miss him still every day.
